Germany vs. Asia
What will surprise you

Many Asian students arrive in Germany expecting 7-Eleven, Watson’s, Alipay and GrabFood around every corner. None of those brands exist here — but there are alternatives for everything. This guide gives you the complete side-by-side comparison so you can hit the ground running.

⚠️ The biggest misconception: Cash is still king in Germany. Many small restaurants, bakeries and markets do not accept card payments at all. Always carry 20–30 euros in cash.

🛒 Convenience Stores & Kiosks

What you know

7-Eleven, FamilyMart, OK Mart — 24/7, everything instantly available, on every street corner.

What you’ll find here

The shock

Almost everything is closed on Sundays. Supermarkets typically close at 22:00. There is no ubiquitous convenience food culture.

Solution: Do your grocery shopping on Thursday or Friday for the whole week. Petrol station for emergencies — but expect to pay more.

🧩 Drugstore / Pharmacy

Watson’s (HK/SG/TW/MY) → dm or Rossmann

Similar product range: body care, hair care, cosmetics, vitamins, over-the-counter medicines.

Note: Prescription-free medicines (ibuprofen, paracetamol) are sold at Apotheke (pharmacy) only — not at dm, Rossmann or supermarkets.

💳 Payments — The Biggest Culture Shock

What you know

PayNow, PayLah!, GrabPay, Alipay, LINE Pay — scan a QR code, done.

What you’ll find here

First thing to do: Open an N26 or DKB account immediately — free, no credit check required. Then: debit card + 30 euros cash = you can pay anywhere. See our bank account guide.

📱 Online Shopping

Lazada / Shopee / Taobao → Amazon.de, Zalando, otto.de, Kleinanzeigen.de

Ordering from Taobao / Shopee International to Germany: 3–6 weeks delivery + possible customs fees for orders over €150. For everyday items, use Amazon.de instead.

🚌 Getting Around

Grab / GoJek / Ola → Uber (expensive!), Taxi (even more expensive), public transport (cheap)

Tip: Use the RMV app instead of Uber. If you’re enrolled at TU Darmstadt, the Semesterticket covers all RMV public transport for free. See our transport guide.

📲 Communication

Do this immediately: Set up your TU Darmstadt email address. Exam results, enrolment certificates and deadlines only come through your university email — not SMS or WeChat.
