Darmstadt is consistently rated as one of the most cycle-friendly cities in Hesse. A large proportion of TU students commute by bike every day.
- Your own bike: Strongly recommended. Get a cut-resistant lock (at least €60) and register it with the police (Fahrradregistrierung).
- Call a Bike (Deutsche Bahn Rad): Stations at Hbf, Luisenplatz and TU campus. €1 per 30 min or monthly subscription via DB Rad app.
- NextBike: Another bike-share network — unlock via app. Good for spontaneous trips.
- ADFC Darmstadt: Cycling club with repair courses and member bike rentals — great for students on a budget.
Essential Apps
- RMV app (free) — real-time departures, journey planner, ticket purchase. Your number-one transport app.
- DB Navigator (free) — Deutsche Bahn app, best for regional rail and long-distance Sparpreis bookings.
- NextBike app — scan QR code, unlock bike, go.
- Google Maps / Apple Maps — good for first orientation, but RMV app is more accurate for timetables.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the semester ticket included in the TU Darmstadt semester fee?
Yes. Automatically included — no separate purchase needed. Valid for the entire RMV network throughout Hesse.
Can I travel to Frankfurt with the semester ticket?
Yes. Frankfurt is fully within the RMV area. S-Bahn or Regionalbahn from Darmstadt Hbf, approx. 30–40 minutes, free with your semester ticket.
When does the semester ticket become valid?
From the official semester start: 1 April (summer semester) or 1 October (winter semester). Your TU student ID card carries the ticket — you receive it after completing enrolment.
Which tram line goes directly to TU Darmstadt?
Line 2 (stop: Willy-Brandt-Platz / TU Lichtwiese) and Line 9 (Hochschulstadion / TU Lichtwiese). Both reachable from Luisenplatz.
Are there rental bikes near the ORO complex?
The nearest Call a Bike stations are at Luisenplatz (approx. 1.2 km). For daily commutes we recommend a personal bike — the building has a secure basement bike room.
What if I need to travel during the semester holidays?
The semester ticket may have limited validity during holidays. Check exact dates in the RMV ticket finder. For extended holiday travel, consider the Deutschlandticket (€49/month) as a supplement — valid on all local transport nationwide.
