🍱 First Week — Practical Basics for Newcomers

Groceries — PENNY & REWE First stop

Cycling to TU — 8 minutes
From Magdalenenstraße (CampusStay) to the TU Darmstadt main building is about 2 km / 8 min by bike. Route: Magdalenenstr. → city centre → Hochschulstr. No car needed. Bike rental: nextbike Darmstadt (1.00 €/30 min, first 30 min free with semester ticket).
Weekly Market Luisenplatz — Tue & Fri
Every Tuesday and Friday 07:00–14:00 at Luisenplatz (3 min walk). Fresh fruit, vegetables, bread and cheese — cheaper than supermarkets, direct from producers. Great for cooking at home.
Pharmacy (Apotheke) — Medicines & Health
Apotheke am Luisenplatz (Luisenplatz 5, next to the Bürgerbüro): Mon–Fri 08:30–18:30, Sat 09:00–14:00. Prescription medicines require a doctor’s prescription. Over-the-counter items (cold remedies, plasters, pain relief) are freely available. Important: In Germany there are no medicines in supermarkets — always go to a pharmacy.
Mathildenhöhe — UNESCO World Heritage Site Partly free
The Mathildenhöhe is the crown jewel of Darmstadt — and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. This stunning Art Nouveau ensemble from the early 20th century is just 15 minutes on foot from Luisenplatz and is an absolute must for anyone living in Darmstadt.
- Wedding Tower (1908): The city's landmark — free to view from outside; a small fee to climb the tower itself.
- Russian Chapel: A golden-domed Orthodox chapel commissioned by Tsar Nicholas II. The exterior grounds are freely accessible.

Day Trips from Darmstadt
Darmstadt's location in the heart of the Rhine-Main region makes it the perfect base for weekend excursions. With the semester ticket, many journeys are free or very affordable.
Frankfurt am Main 30–40 min.
S3 or S4 from Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof. Highlights: Museum Embankment (many museums free on Saturdays), Sachsenhausen Schweizer Straße (bars), Kleinmarkthalle (street food), Rhine riverbank in summer.
Heidelberg ca. 50 min.
By train via Mannheim. Heidelberg Castle, Old Town, Philosophers' Walk — one of Germany's most beautiful cities. Great for a day trip or weekend away. Castle grounds are free to enter.
Odenwald & Bergstraße 30–60 min.
Nature right on your doorstep: hikes in the Odenwald, Frankenstein Castle (famous Halloween event!), wine tastings along the Bergstraße. Reachable by bus or bike.
Wiesbaden ca. 45 min.
The Hessian state capital offers the elegant Kurpark, the Old Town with its Käfer shopping district and the Hessian State Theatre. Reachable by S-Bahn via Frankfurt.
