Everyone living in Germany — including international students and researchers — must register their address within 14 days of moving in. This guide walks you through every step of the Anmeldung process in Darmstadt, from the documents you need to what happens afterwards.
Why is Registration Required?
The German Federal Registration Act (§ 17 BMG) requires all residents to register at the local registration office (Bürgbüro), regardless of nationality, visa status, or length of stay. Your Meldebescheinigung (registration certificate) is required for:
- Opening a German bank account
- Obtaining your tax identification number (Steuer-ID)
- Enrolling at TU Darmstadt or h_da
- Joining statutory health insurance (Krankenkasse)
- Extending your residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel)
- Applying for BAföG (for eligible students)

- Registration form (Anmeldeformular) — provided at the office or downloadable in advance
- Non-EU citizens: valid visa or residence permit
What is the Wohnungsgeberbestaetigung?
The Wohnungsgeberbestaetigung (§ 19 BMG) is a mandatory document your landlord must sign. It officially confirms that you have moved into the stated apartment. Without it, registration is not possible.
It includes: your new address, your name, your move-in date, and your landlord’s name and signature.
What You Receive After Registration
- Meldebescheinigung (issued immediately) — proof of address, needed for bank accounts, university enrollment, insurance
- Steuerliche Identifikationsnummer / Steuer-ID (by post, approx. 2–3 weeks) — sent automatically, no application needed
- Rundfunkbeitrag letter — €18.36/month per household (not per person). Shared apartments pay once collectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to register even for a 3-month stay?
Yes. The Meldepflicht applies from your first day in a rented apartment. Only tourists without a permanent address are exempt.
What happens if I miss the 14-day deadline?
Rarely immediate consequences, but register as soon as possible — your bank account and health insurance require the Meldebescheinigung.
Can I register without an appointment?
Walk-ins are sometimes possible, but waiting times can be 1–2 hours. An online appointment is far more reliable.
Do I need to de-register when I leave Darmstadt?
Yes. De-registration (Abmeldung, § 17 BMG) is required when leaving Germany or moving to another city. It is free and often possible without an appointment.
Am I required to register as an Erasmus student?
Yes. Any Erasmus student living in an apartment (not a hotel) must register their address in Germany.
