Internet & SIM Card in Germany
The complete guide for international students
Getting online in Germany is straightforward once you know the options. From a prepaid SIM card you can buy on the first day to fibre-ready home internet at CampusStay, free eduroam at TU Darmstadt, and a VPN for accessing university databases — this guide covers everything you need.
Staying connected in Germany — SIM card, home internet and eduroam explained
📲 SIM Card — Prepaid for instant connectivity
The simplest way to get online on your first day in Germany: a prepaid SIM card. No contract, no German bank account needed, available immediately in supermarkets and drugstores.
Aldi Talk From €10
One of the cheapest prepaid options in Germany. Monthly data packages from €10, running on the Telekom network (Germany's strongest). Buy at any Aldi store, top up online or via the app. No contract, no cancellation period.
Lidl Connect From €10
Also runs on the Telekom network, comparable pricing to Aldi Talk. Starter kit available at the Lidl checkout. A solid option for basic data and calls during your first few weeks.
Contract plans after 3+ months
Once you've been in Germany for at least 3 months and have a German bank account, a monthly plan gives better value:
- O2: student-friendly plans, good data allowances, own network.
- Telekom: best nationwide coverage, slightly more expensive.
- Vodafone: second-strongest coverage, frequent student promotions.
- 1&1: competitive flat-rate plans for heavy data users.
✈️ eSIM for arrival and interim use
Airalo eSIM Activated instantly
Perfect for before or on arrival: buy a Germany or Europe eSIM through the Airalo app and activate it immediately — no physical card needed. Significantly cheaper than roaming with a non-EU provider. Requires a dual-SIM or eSIM-compatible smartphone. App: search “Airalo” in the App Store or Google Play.
🏠 Home internet at the ORO complex
The ORO complex (CampusStay Darmstadt, Eschollbrücker Str. 18) is built with fibre optic infrastructure — potential speeds up to 1 Gbit/s. However, internet is not included in the rent: each tenant signs their own contract with a provider.
Fibre connection available Building ready
Fibre from Telekom or Vodafone can be ordered directly for the building. Recommendation: apply online as soon as you move in. Waiting time: 4–6 weeks until activation. Use your prepaid SIM as a hotspot in the meantime.
Bridge solutions while you wait
- Use your prepaid SIM as a personal hotspot
- eduroam at TU Darmstadt (campus-wide, free with university login)
- Stadtbibliothek Darmstadt (free guest WiFi)
📶 Free WiFi in Darmstadt
eduroam — TU Darmstadt Free
Once enrolled at TU Darmstadt, you get access to eduroam — the campus-wide WiFi network. Set it up once using the “geteduroam” app (iOS/Android) with your TU credentials, and your device connects automatically on campus, in the library, and in cafeterias. The same eduroam login works at thousands of universities across Europe.
Stadtbibliothek Darmstadt Free
The city library at Marktplatz offers free WiFi for all visitors. Great for focused study sessions with a reliable connection. Opening hours: Mon–Fri 10am–7pm, Sat 10am–3pm.
McDonald’s, Starbucks & chains Time-limited
Major chains offer free WiFi after a quick registration (email or phone). Useful for short sessions, but not reliable as a substitute for home internet. Connections are often slow when busy.
🔒 VPN — University access and security
A VPN matters in two situations:
- TU VPN for university resources: Many academic databases (IEEE, ACM, Springer), journals and internal TU systems are only accessible from within the university network. The TU Darmstadt VPN (Cisco AnyConnect) is provided free by the university IT centre (HRZ).
- Security on public WiFi: In unprotected networks (library, café, station), a VPN encrypts your connection and prevents interception.
TU VPN (Cisco AnyConnect) Free for students
The HRZ (university IT centre) provides Cisco AnyConnect free of charge. Once configured, it gives you access to all licensed databases and internal TU services from anywhere in the world. Setup instructions are documented on hrz.tu-darmstadt.de.
ProtonVPN Free alternative
Swiss VPN provider with a free tier (limited servers, unlimited data). No-logs policy, open-source, trustworthy. Ideal for general privacy protection on public WiFi. Available for iOS, Android, Windows and macOS.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
For day one: Aldi Talk or Lidl Connect — both cheap, no contract required, available from any supermarket from around €10. Both use the Telekom network. After 3+ months, switch to a contract plan (O2, Telekom, Vodafone) once you have a German IBAN for better data allowances.
Prepaid SIMs (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect): no bank account needed, pay cash. Monthly contracts (O2, Telekom, Vodafone): German IBAN required for direct debit. N26 and DKB can be opened without a SCHUFA check. See our bank account guide.
Typically 4 to 6 weeks from signing to activation. The ORO complex has fibre infrastructure — apply as early as possible, ideally before you move in. Bridge the gap with your prepaid SIM as a hotspot or eduroam on campus.
Yes — eduroam covers the entire campus. Set it up once with the “geteduroam” app using your TU login. Works automatically across campus and at universities across Europe.
TU VPN (Cisco AnyConnect, free) is essential for off-campus access to university databases and licensed journals. ProtonVPN (free tier) provides good general-purpose protection on public WiFi networks.
